The Project

Earth Nouveau is a 9 card set of sustainability-themed cards, with the intention of spreading information about the sustainability efforts of UMass Lowell. It was created
as a team by Andrea Garcia and Daly Grogan, UML graphic design alumni who were also members of the UML Honors College. The pair used the theme of Art Nouveau as inspiration and created these cards under the guidance of their professor, Ingrid Hess.

The cards & Artwork

We created 9 images and 3 borders. They were based off of the different aspects of UML that makes our college sustainable and special. 3 pollinators, 3 birds, and 3 plants. Each set of 3 images was framed in a unique thematic border.

Cards

Their impact

The cards have been included in two shows. The first one was the Spring 2024 student Graphic Design art show. Then, they were displayed in a solo exhibition in the Fall of 2024. For this show, all 9 cards were printed on canvas, professionally framed and hung in the University Crossing building on the UMass Lowell campus.

Since their completion, the cards have also been used by the UML Honors College, the Office of Admissions, the Rist Institute and the Office of Chancellor Julie Chen. A number of the canvas prints are to hang permanently in the Honor’s building (Allen House) on South Campus.
